Delegation to Argentina 2007

   •     Tour recovered factories cooperatively owned and managed by its workers, and talk with the men and women that took them over and are organizing their own work places now.

     •     Meet with representatives of the Piquetero Movement of unemployed workers who have conducted roadblocks in protest to government corruption and IMF policies, do not receive welfare plans and are presently coordinating their own enterprises.

      •     Meet with the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo who continue to organize for Human Rights in Argentina.

      •      Visit a Shanty town and talk with local organizers

      •      Workshops about Peronism, History of Labor Movement, IMF and Argentina , Art and Activism and New Social Movements

      •     Explore the music of tango with a group of young self-managed Tango musicians, the Fernandez Fierro Tango Orchestra.

      •     Tour the rich and poor areas of the city with Eternautas (http://www.eternautas.com)

9-11 AM Alan Cibils workshop: “ Argentina and the IMF”
12 noon Lunch and Visit with the unemployed workers’ organization MTD La Matanza.
We’ll talk with Toti and Soledad members of this group in the outskirts of Buenos Aires , that has created in the past years an amazing array of self-managed enterprises such as kindergarten, bakery, silk-screening and sewing workshops.

Walking tour “ Buenos Aires : Paris of SouthAmerica”. A walk around this section of Retiro which showcases the features of 1900's architecture as no other part of town, a style which reached its peak at the time of the country’s centennial celebrations. San Martí­n Square represents the old elite's first step in the search for a more exclusive social space. In the first decade of the twentieth century, the most renowned families had established their palace residences there, creating one of the most Parisian corners of BA. The tour will end in Recoleta district where on Saturdays there’s a big craft market.

2.00 PM Visit to El Global, recovered factory of balloons and Gatic, recovered factory of tennis-shoes (Ex-Adidas).

9-11 AM Workshop: “Understanding Peronismo” with Samuel Amaral

2.00 PM “The Hidden South” - a tour around forgotten districts of Buenos Aires, far away from the main tourist routes. Barracas, Nueva Pompeya, Parque Patricios and Boedo, popular neighborhoods, in which immigration, labor movement –socialist & anarquist-, tango and popular literrature play the main roles.
9.00 PM Attendance at the show of “Fernández Fierro Tango Orchestra”, a group of self-managed young tango musicians.
January 12
9-11 AM Workshop: “Gender and Social Movements”

2.00 PM Visit to Patricios recovered press house and Ceres, a recovered sweatshop run by women.

These fees are subject to change. We are requesting two different fees, one for people willing to stay at a hostel, in a shared room with up to four other people and another one staying at the Bauen Hotel (under workers control), in a single occupancy room.

• International airfare, dinners, aiirport departure taxes, ($ 18.00/person) tips, and personal expenses.

• For Fee B Single-room hotel (dates TBA).

• For both fees: transfer to and from the airport, light breakfast and lunch every day; transportation to and from all programmed activities; guides and translators; a qualified trip leader; all program activities; and reading materials, modest donations to movements we visit and fees for faculty workshop leaders.
